Benjamin LEWIS
Benjamin was born b.c.1829 at Aberdare, Glenmorganshire, South Wales. His parents were David and Mary LEWIS. In the 1841 Census, when Ben was 12 years old, he was living with his father, mother and 4 siblings at Hirwain Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales (north of Cardiff). In the 1851 Census, Benjamin was 22 years old and was working as a Collier. He lived with his mother who was working as a Baker at Hirwain Castle, Aberdare. His father had died. The only wrinkle to this is that a different transcript of the 1851 census has Benjamin LEWIS registered as a visitor at Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales with the same birth year but says he was born at Cardiff, Glamorganshire. This other transcript says he was a visitor to this household at the time of the census and he was an Iron Miner. His mother's maiden name was DONEGAN.

Mary EDWARDS
Mary was born c.1829 (1829 inferred from the newspaper death notice -1832 inferred from ship log).

Benjamin LEWIS married Mary Nash EDWARDS 17th October 1853 at Glamorganshire, Wales.
Benjamin and Mary emigrated on the ship 'TAYMOUTH CASTLE', leaving from Plymouth 7th February 1854, arriving at Port Adelaide on 3rd May 1854.

Benjamin was a miner. Their first child (Margaret) was born in Adelaide 24 Aug 1854. It would seem that Mary was 2 months pregnant when they departed Plymouth and about 6 months when they arrived in Port Adelaide. Their second child (Elizabeth) was born in Littlehampton 14 Aug 1860. I have not been able to discover anything about their movements from 1854 until 1859, and given that Benjamin was a miner, I am guessing he may have been at the mines in Callington. In the South Australian Advertiser 4th November 1859, Benjamin is listed as the intending purchaser of a Residence in Littlehampton from George Wright. Lots 72, 73, 74, 75 Littlehampton, of Section 5010. If my reading of the original survey map is correct, that would have been around what is now 15 North Terrace, Littlehampton. I have found several references to Benjamin LEWIS in the period from 1880 - 1884 contracting road metal, and road making services and in 1895 timber clearing and cutting fence posts.

Benjamin died 11th February 1897 (68yrs) at Littlehampton, of heart disease.
Mary died 22nd August 1905 (76yrs) at her son-in-law's residence (Mr. James A. CHILDS) Littlehampton
They are both at Blakiston Church Cemetery.
