Nicholas married Grace HAWKES 26 June 1820 at Helston Cornwall.
In 1820 Nicholas and his family owned a soap shop and candle making store in Meneage Street, the main Street of Helston.
Prior to that, Nicholas was a farmer near Helston.
Grace HOCKING (HAWKES) died 2 Feb 1835 Helston Cornwall.
Nicholas HOCKING married Charlotte HARRAP in Dec 1836 at Helston Cornwall.

Emigration to South Australia

On 17 Apr 1839, William HOCKING, aged 18 years, and described as a wheelwright, made an application to emigrate to South Australia (No. 4696). Lucinda HOCKING, aged 16 years, described as a milliner, also applied (No. 4697), and Nicholas (their father) applied for himself, his wife Charlotte and the three youngest children, Nicholas, Richard Williams and George Henry (No. 4698). Elizabeth Williams HOCKING, aged 19 years, the eldest child, did not apply to emigrate.

The Hocking family emigrated to South Australia on 'Cleveland', arriving in South Australia in December 1839. There were 189 passengers on board. More than 60 were from Cornwall.

Several sources have 'Cleveland' departing Falmouth Cornwall on 17 Jun 1839. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall have advised that that Falmouth Harbour records do not go back to 1839, so the departure of the 50+ Cornish emigrants from Falmouth on 'Cleveland' cannot be confirmed although it is possible. Enquiries are continuing.

Lloyds Lists have 'Cleveland'.
• cleared outwards from London on 23 July 1829.
• departing Gravesend 27 July 1839.
• arriving Plymouth 4 August 1839.
• departing Plymouth 8 August 1839 for Port Adelaide.

There were reports that the ship anchored at Holdfast Bay 19 Dec 1839 and that some of the passengers went ashore on 23 Dec 1839, while some continued on to Port Adelaide to disembark on 26 Dec 1839.

According to the 1841 South Australian Census, the family was living in Leigh Street, Adelaide (although the surname listed was HUCKING). At the address was Nicholas 47yrs, Charlotte 44yrs and 3 children, Lucinda 16yrs, Richard Williams 10yrs and George Henry 3yrs. William and Nicholas jnr. were not listed at the address and were presumed to be working away.

On 29 Nov 1841, Nicholas and Charlotte bought a property close to Whitmore Square. It faced what is now known as Saltram Place. By 1842 they had established a Tallow and Chandler business. On 23 Dec 1853, in partnership with their son George Henry HOCKING, they purchased a 45 hectare property at Athelstone, just west of the Black Hill Conservation Park. They still had this property in 1865.

Nicholas HOCKING died at Ross Creek on 14 Aug 1870 and was buried in the old cemetery at Buninyong on 17 August 1870 a few km south-east of Ballarat. Charlotte died 14 March 1881 and was buried with Nicholas at Buninyong (plot no. 0632).

William married Harriet JANES on 2 Jan 1843 at St. Johns Church, Adelaide.
Harriet emigrated to S.A. on the same ship as William, the "Cleveland".
Harriet was born 1817 (from her age on the ship list).
William lived in Sturt Street and worked as a parchment maker.
Harriet was at Kensington and was working as a servant.
Harriet died 1 Nov 1862 (West Terrace Cemetery).
William died 24 April 1868 (West Terrace Cemetery).

#4 Nicholas HOCKING jnr

(alt. 11 Jun 1828 or 2 Jul 1828 or 6 Nov 1828).
Married Sarah SHORE 28 May 1849 St. John's Church, Adelaide.

About 1860, Nicholas jnr. moved to Nairne and in 1872, he moved to Horesham, Victoria, where he established an Engineering and Blacksmithing business. In April 1869, they were living at Wombat Flat (nr. Daylesford Victoria).
Nicholas died 17 Aug 1880 (53yrs) Ballarat, Victoria (alt. d. Horsham, Victoria).
Sarah died 22 Apr 1887 (60yrs) at her residence, Whitmore Square, Adelaide.

Lucy b. 2 Jun 1840 at Bridgewater, Somerset, England.
Parents Joseph PAIN and Sarah WHITE.
Lucy arrived in SA 26 Aug 1854 (13yrs) on Kingston from Hobart.
They lived at Enfield, Victoria (known then as Ross Creek).
George Henry HOCKING went to Ballarat and on 18 Nov 1862 he married Lucy PAIN.
Nicholas and Charlotte sold their farm in Athelstone on 10 Mar 1865 and went to Ballarat also. George Henry worked as a carter, as he had done in South Australia.
They may have had a small store (a grog shanty?).

George d. 7 Nov 1917 (79) at Sebastopol, Vic. (Buninyong Cemetery).
