Nicholas HOCKING and Charlotte HOCKING (HARROP) came to South Australia with 5 (or possibly 6) children. Nicholas applied for himself, his wife Charlotte and the three youngest children, Nicholas, Richard Williams and George Henry. William HOCKING, aged 18 years, and described as a wheelwright, made an separate application to emigrate to South Australia as did his sister Lucinda HOCKING, aged 16 years, described as a milliner. Elizabeth Williams HOCKING, aged 19 years, the eldest child of Nicholas and Grace, did not emigrate.
The family left Falmouth, Cornwall 17 June 1839 on 'Cleveland' for Plymouth. The ship departed Plymouth 8 August 1839 and arrived in South Australian waters 19 December 1839. Reports were that some of the passengers left the ship at Holdfast Bay while some stayed on board, coming ashore at Port Adelaide 26 December 1839.
According to the 1841 South Australian Census, the family was living in Leigh Street, Adelaide (although the surname was listed as HUCKING). At the address was Nicholas 47yrs, Charlotte 44yrs and 3 children, Lucinda 16yrs, Richard Williams 10yrs and George Henry 3yrs. William and Nicholas jnr. were not listed at the address and were presumed to be working away.
Also emigrating on the 'Cleveland' was a single female, Harriet JAMES. William HOCKING married Harriet JAMES 2 Jan 1843 at St. Johns Church, Adelaide. William had been living in Sturt Street at the time and worked as a parchment maker. Harriet had been living at Kensington and had worked as a servant.
